Flood in the Rift Valley

This “rainy season” has been one of the driest in recent history for northern Tanzania.  The whole valley had been in a terrible state of drought, waiting daily for the rains to come.  Suddenly they did come, in full force, as we were shocked to see when we came down into the Rift Valley the other day headed toward Tarangire National Park.  The entire valley had become one giant lake.  A giraffe slipped and died in the mud.  The road was covered in debris and mud.  Maasai people whose bomas had flooded lined the sides of the road.  It was amazing how much had changed overnight.  But now the crops can grow and people don’t have to go thirsty.  Rain can be a mixed blessing, I guess.

Until next time,
